Sallyportal: Brand Development

In the Fall of 2016, Rice University launched Sallyportal, an online professional development resource for students, alumni and parents - essentially a LinkedIn for the Rice community only. With this new network, a brand would need to be built from the ground up. The University planned to launch Sallyportal on Rice Day, October 12, 2016, which would require the creation of "stations" where students and alumni could sign-up.

The name Sallyportal was submitted by an alumnus in a contest held by the Office of Alumni Relations and was selected out of nearly 140 submissions. The name Sallyportal reflects the use of the platform as a portal to connect Rice students and alumni, as well as Rice’s signature Sallyport — the iconic archway in the center of Lovett Hall on Rice's campus. When brainstorming the design of a logo, we took these ideas into consideration. The branding would also need to speak to Rice University's main brand color of navy blue.

Today, Sallyportal has over 7,500 users and won a CASE (Council for Advancement and Support of Education) Silver Award in 2017 for Student Alumni Initiatives

 As a social media campaign, fellow staff members asked Rice alumni and students to share what they could offer and what they were looking for on Sallyportal. We then photographed them with their answers and shared on our social media platforms and through email.

 In 2017, Sallyportal celebrated it's first birthday. Promotional emails with the banner above were sent to alumni, advertising networking celebrations around the country.
